John von Neumann :: Computer Science

John von Neumann----------------Von Neumann, a mathematician designed the architecture modelfor a CPU. This model was a single storage organise to hold both theset of instruction manual on how to perform the computation and the datarequired or generated by the computation. He designed it by treating the instructions in the same way as thedata, a stored-program machine can easily change the instructions. Inother words the machine is reprogrammable.Von Neumanns archtectre is still used it todays modern CPUS.The CPU-------This diagram represents the structure of the Central ProcessingSystem.Arithmetic Logic Unit---------------------The ALU performs addition and subtraction, logic operations, masking, and faulting (multiplication and division).Control Unit------------The Control Unit is the heart of the computer. It controls andco-ordinates the systems operations. This contains the system clock, program counter and the instruction register. It also manages thesignals from the control ma ss.Registers---------This is a form of high-speed remembrance which is contained inside of theCPU. All data must be represented in a register before it can beprocessed. Information is stored temporarily in the registers in whichtext or buffer positions or rectangles can be saved for later use.Buses-----A bus is a channel or track between the components in a computer.Having a high-speed bus is important. A bus lets you connect computerscomponents to the processor. The advantage of a bus is that it makes parts more interchangeable. Ifyou unavoidableness to get a better graphics card, you simply unplug the old cardfrom the bus and plug in a new one. If you want twain monitors on yourcomputer, you plug two graphics cards into the bus. And so on.A PC usually has two buses. The first connects the CPU and the systemmemory. This is the fastest bus in the system. The second bus is theslower and it connects other devices, like the hard disk, CD drive,

Poes Fall of The House of Usher Essay: Biographical Contexts

Biographical Contexts For The Fall of the House of Usher In the summer of 1838, Edgar Allan Poe left the city of New York, where he faced criticism and minimal recognition, and moved to Philadelphia, where he would soon gain profound success (Quinn 268). Just a year prior to this move, Poe married his cousin, Virginia Clemm, who go with him to Philadelphia (Wagenknecht 18). Little is known of Poes time in New York other than the fact that he faced severe poverty with total earnings amounting to under star hundred fifty dollars (Peeples 31). Therefore, since Philadelphia shared the prestige with New York as a publishing center, it offered Poe new publishing opportunities and opened the doors to success (Quinn 268). He found this success editing Burtons Gentlemans Magazine from 1839-1840 and then Grahams Magazine from 1841-1842 (Peeples 74). During this time, Poe delivered lectures on American poetry, published thirty-six tales including William Wilson, The Masque of the Red Death, and The Murders in the Rue Morgue, and also released a army of stories in 1840 entitled Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque (Peoples 74). It was during this peak of Poes publishing career that he published The Fall of the House of Usher. This tale relates to various aspects of Poes liveness including his occupation as an editor, his battle with alcohol and drugs, his psychological and emotional well-being, and the impact of death on his life and work. Although Poe found success while working for Burton and Graham, he did not settle contentment, for neither Burtons magazine nor Grahams met Poes expectations of his ideal publication. Poe was frustrated with his career and aspired to edit a magazine of his own, a magazine of ... ...mes of his publishing career, yet Poe faced many obstacles in his private life during this time including poverty and alcohol abuse. Although his alleged alcohol and drug addictions are issues yet to be settled, they were clearly an influence in his l ife and work. In addition to his habits regarding alcohol and drugs, his psychological stability has also been called into question. The impact of death, which was prevalent throughout his life, was tremendous. Regardless of the many struggles Poe encounter, he has emerged as one the greatest Romantic writers in American history. Works Cited Peeples, Scott. Edgar Allan Poe Revisited. New York Twayne, 1998. Haunukkah

Hanukkah is an eight day Jewish holiday commemorating the rededication of the holy temple in capital of Israel at the time of the Maccabean revolt of the second century BCE. This holiday is observed for eight nights and eight days, starting at the 25th day of Kislev according to the Hebraic calendar. Which is around late November or late December according to the Gregorian calendar. This museum exhibit ordain direct paintings, artifacts and accurate information on Hanukkah. I will also include all the Jewish holidays to show where Hanukkah falls in theses major events in history. It is important for me to give credit to all the events that gave way to Hanukkah not only before but after Hanukkah. The second Jewish temple was an important Jewish holy temple which stood on the temple mount in Jerusalem during the second temple period, between 516 BCE and 70 CE. It replaced the first temple which was destroyed in 586 BCE, when the Jewish nation was exiled to Babylon. The destruction of the second temple and its cocker by the Roman Legions marked the beginning of the Israels long exile, which ended the birth of the state of Israel. The Hanukkah menorah is, strictly speaking, a nine-branched candelabrum lit during the eight-day holiday of Hanukkah, as opposed to the seven-branched menorah use in the ancient Temple or as a symbolism. The ninth holder, called the Shamash (helper or servant), is for a candle used to light all other candles and/or to be used as an extra light. The menorah is among the most widely produced articles of Jewish ceremonial art. The seven-branched menorah is a traditional symbol of Judaism. The Star of David is a six-pointed star made up of two triangles superimposed over each other. In Judaism it is often called the Magen David, which means the shield of David in Hebrew. It doesnt have any religious significance in Judaism but it is one of the symbols most commonly associated with the Jewish people. Many Jews wear jewelry with the Star of Da vid as straggle of the design and the flag of Israel has a blue Star of David in the center. In many ways it has come to be a symbol of unity. Hanukkah food is root in tradition and almost all Hanukkah recipes stem from the history associated with it. Traditional Hanukkah foods include ried or baked foods as the festival itself celebrates the miracle of a small nub of olive oil burning for eight long days. Potato pancakes popularly known by its Yiddish name, Latkes are an all-time favorite and these Hanukah foods are prepared by deep frying it in oil preferably olive oil. A dreidel is a four-sided spinning top with a Hebrew letter on each side. It is used during Hanukkah to play a popular childrens game that involves spinning the dreidel and betting on which Hebrew letter will be covering when the dreidel stops spinning.Reference (n. d. ). Discuss Proto-Luke Theory Essay

Whilst other scholars had previously thought of sics Gospel as the foundation for Luke, B.H. Streeter refutes these assimilates and suggests the opposite. He named this theory Proto-Luke, which suggests that while putting together his gospel, Luke wrote an earlier draft which was primarily made up of Q and L sources, before he became acquainted with Mark. This Marcan hearty was used as a secondary source, which was later slotted into an animate story, which makes up the present gospel. The previous draft, which excluded any Marcan content, was dubbed Proto-Luke. Arguments supporting Streeters hypothesis include the very structure of Lukes Gospel. Rather than interweaving the Q, L and Marcon sources together, the gospel alternates surrounded by five large blocks from Mark and the smoothly flowing Q and L sections. Mark is a quarry from which stone is obtained to enlarge an existing building. Taylor. How Q and L are combine together suggests they were used in harmony with each another, which agrees with the Proto-Luke theory. It seems that Luke used Q to carefully select sayings of Jesus which would expand his own research. However, natural sourced from Mark is dropped in without variety with Q and L information. The scholar Taylor argues that when we exclude the Marcan content, the Q and L material flows in a understandable way, a so- grouseed relative continuality. Therefore, the suggestion that a Proto-Luke version of the gospel existed prior to the substructure of Mark is a perfectly acceptable argument. Stanton applied this to the passion narrative by removing the Marcan verses and found that from Luke 2214 and 2353, (163 verses), nevertheless twenty were to tot up dependant on Mark. If they are removed we still seem to pay back a reproducible non-Marcan passion narrative. Stanton. The beginning and ending of Lukes Gospel contain no material drawn from Mark.If Luke already had a gospel before he came across the Marcan material, then it makes sense that he would set off his own introduction and conclusions untouched whilst editing the middle in order to insert blocks from Mark. However, Stanton notes that Proto-Luke may have begun at 31, due to the formal introduction In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar The fact that Luke omits so much of Mark, which accounts for a third of Luke, may suggest that he is giving priority to his real Proto-Luke limitations. Stanton talks of Lukes disloyalty to his Marcan source At many points, only two of which can be mentioned here, Lukes gospel seems to betray its Marcan basis. If Mark was Lukes role model for his gospel, how can we explain the omission of this much Marcan material? Another point to consider is the restrictions of writing on a papyrus scroll, the length of this would limit the tip to which Luke could supplement Proto-Luke with Marcan information. On the other hand, many arguments discredit the Proto-Luke hypothesis. As of yet, scholars cannot agree on t he verses that came from Mark and the verses which belong to Q and L, but the scholar Tuckett has claimed to have identified phrases from Mark in amongst blocks of Q and L. If he is correct in these claims then the Proto-Luke theory is doubtful. Having said that it may have been possible for Q and L to have existed in a coherent order without any Marcan material, there are still holes in the narrative flow that Q and L create. This point can lend itself to arguments against Proto-Luke, leading some scholars to call it an amorphous collection. If it doesnt read like a single document, then perhaps Proto-Luke never existed. For example, between 83 and 951, when Marcan material is removed, an awkward gap is revealed, as there is nothing about Jesus time in Galilee. Discontinuity like this in Proto-Luke goes against the hypothesis that it ever existed.Another view twists one particular argument in favour of Proto-Luke about how Q and L are combined, with Marcan content awkwardly slotted in. We are familiar with Lukes compositional style, it is in like personal manner seen in Acts, which features abrupt shifts between the we sections and the rest of the gospel. There are also suggestions that the infancy narrative may have been added to Luke later, as it doesnt seem to tog with the rest of the Gospel. These features of Lukes writing indicate his tendency to throw his various sources of information together. Then this style may not have been unique to the Marcan material that Luke supposedly added to his Proto-Luke draft. Maybe this is just how Luke prefers to set out all of his writing? Hence, the proto-Luke theory looses credibility if this is evidently the manner in which Luke constructs all his documents.Luke may have felt that Marks Gospel was too important to alter in any way, so he slotted it into his Gospel in the same manner he did with other important sources. Scholars such as Fitzmyer propose that certain doublets in the Marcan material can show that Mark was actually a uncomplicated source. There are a number of repeated, similar phrases, for example to all those who have more will be given, but for those who have nothing even so what they have will be taken away features in 818 and 1926. When this happens, one version of the phrase comes from Mark and the other originates from Q (shared with Matthew). When we tally up where all of these phrases come from, most are sourced from Mark, leading the theory that Mark was actually an early framework for Lukes Gospel. Whilst piecing his gospel together, Luke may simply have decided to use Mark in block form however that does not mean that Marcan material was added in later, in a two-stage composition (as noted by Taylor). Guthrie commented on this hypothesis, and said that although it had grounding, it was too weak to justify a full inquiry although the hypothesis may have explained certain features in the disruption of Luke, it cannot be said that features demand the hypothesis.

Arcangelo Corelli: the Period, Life, and Works

Brianna Hunter MUL1110-3060 Professor Kranz February 20, 2013 Arcangelo Corelli The Period, Life, and Works Music was discovered thousands of years ago and has only progressively gotten better with the introduction of instruments and the development of melodious dynamics. During the churrigueresco period, in which Arcangelo Corelli lived and died, music was beginning to evolve into a more diverse musical experience. Arcangelo Corelli was one of the few violin and musical composer pioneers that helped shape music and create some of the most recognized compositions of his era.According to Baroque Music, Corelli not only sh ared his musical knowledge with fellow musicians, but was cognise as the founder of modern violin technique, the worlds low gear great violinist, and the father of concerto grosso. The period, purport, and works in which the great Arcangelo Corelli lived testament be discussed in greater detail as the paper progresses. To begin, the baroque period, also kn own as the age of absolutism, is classified by the years 1600, in which opera began, to the ending of Johann Sebastian live in 1750 (Kamien 99).Opera was birthed in Italy within the baroque period and provided the people a show of magnificent extravagance with more emphasis on the row than the music (Kamien 118-19). Furthermore, the baroque trendd opera marked the entrance of castrato singers. These singers were males who had been castrated before they hit puberty to ensure the lung power of men and the vocal range of women. By combining virtuosity, nobility, and extravagance, baroque opera perfectly expressed the spirit of a grand age (Kamien 120).As well as the start of opera, the grain of the music was compulsive during the baroque period. In the early baroque period, from 1600 to 1640, musicians favored the homophonic texture of music. Early baroque composers thought the only way to clearly project the lyrics of the songs was to save a main, constant melody with stressed c ontrasting sounds by singers against a chorus or using voices against instruments. On the contrast, during the late baroque period, 1690-1750, the favored texture was polyphonic, just as it had been during the renaissance period (Kamien 102).According to NAU, polyphonic texture contains two or more active melodies with emphasis placed upon the interplay between lines, rather than on a single melody or a stream of chord sounds ( com comparabilityison 1). In addition, the layering of voices shares importance with the polyphonic texture of the baroque period. Layering is when two or more voices move at polar but closely related levels of rhythmic activity, similar to different parts of a machine moving at different but related speeds (Polyphonic par 2).Although homophonic texture paved a way for music of the baroque period, most of the baroque compositions that are well-known used the polyphonic texture which helped instrumental music become as important as vocal music for the first time (Kamien 102) In addition, the straining of the music in the baroque period was also important. The musical forms varied from sonatas to concerto grosso to the most basic forms. For instance, the two basic musical forms are treble form, which is a three-part A B A sequence, and binary form, which is a two-part A B sequence. The most commonly used basic form of the baroque period was the ternary form, which had sounds that mirrored a statement, a contrast or departure, and a return, hinting an A B A sequence (Kamien 49-50). Next, the concerto grosso was very(prenominal) essential for late baroque. The concerto grosso, a littler group of soloists pitted against a larger group of players called the tutti (all), was used by orchestras in upper-class palaces that provided the soloists with brilliant and fanciful melodic lines (Kamien 108).Finally, the sonatas were popular in the baroque period for performes, performances, and for leisure. A sonata is a composition in several move ments for one to eight instruments. In the same way, the trine sonata gained popularity with composers because they were composing for three melodic lines (Kamien 125). With that in mind, Arcangelo Corelli composed a trio sonata in 1689 for stringed instruments called the Trio Sonata in A Minor, Op. 3, No. 10 with four movements (Kamien 126). Although the trio onata would appear to have three parts, the trio sonata in fact has four instrumentalists, with two high instruments and two instruments for the lower basso continuo (Kamien 125). Relatively, tempo was an important development of the baroque era. Before the 17th century, tempo was indicated by notations. Conversely, the baroque period was the beginning of using terms to describe tempo which originated in Italy and quickly spread throughout Europe. Consequently, the terms allay used today to describe tempo are in Italian. For example, allegro subject matter a fast tempo, accelerando means becoming faster, and largo means a very slow tempo. level though the terms were created, some composers still had confusion about the many different meanings that the words could denote. In correlation, the introduction of the metronome allowed composers to become very precise with their tempo markings, however most conductors and performers still tend to regard tempo as a matter of interpretation (Miller par 4). In Fusignano, Italy, on February 17, 1653, over 360 years ago, Italian violinist Arcangelo Corelli was born to a prosperous family.Santa and Arcangelo Corelli Sr. had five children together, including Arcangelo Ippolito, Domenico, Giovanna and Giacinto. Corelli was named after his father who unfortunately died a month before his birth and as a result, he was raised by his single mother, Santa Corelli (Talbot 181). Corellis initial musical studies were with the local clergy near Faenza, Italy and so finally studied in Bologna, Italy in 1666. His studies there were with Giovanni Benvenuti and Leonardo Brugn oli, the former representing the disciplined style of the Accademia filarmonica (to which Corelli was admitted in 1670) (Whent par 1).According to Padre Martini, Arcangelo Corelli took his first violin lessons at Bologna from Benvenuti and then later Brugnoli (Talbot 181). In the mid 1670s, Corelli established himself in Rome, Italy where he found himself in the service of Queen Christina of Sweden in 1679 (Arcangelo par 1). foregoing to meeting Queen Christina, Corelli appeared as a violinist in the orchestra that recruited for a series of Lenten oratorios at S. Giovanni dei Fiorentini in 1676 (Talbot 182). In 1681, Arcangelo dedicated his firearm1 to the Queen of Sweden which he escribed as the first fruits of his studies (Talbot 183-84). In 1684, Corelli began to regularly perform at musical functions for an employer named Cardinal Pamphili. Shortly after beginning his services for Pamphili, Corelli dedicated his piece of music 2 to him in 1685 (Talbot 185). Correspondingly, o n July 9, 1687 Cardinal Pamphili engaged Corelli as his music master at a monthly salary of ten Florentine piasters (Talbot 186). At this time, Corelli and his pupil, Matteo Fornari, travel into Pamphilis palace to serve their talents.Sadly, Pamphili moved out of Rome in 1690, which left Corelli to find a new patron. Fortunately, Corelli quickly found patronage in Cardinal Pietro Ottoboni, to whom he dedicated his Opus 4 to (Kemp par 1). Luckily for Corelli, Ottoboni viewed him more as friend than a servant and allowed Corelli to live the rest of his life in his palace (Kemp par 2). Furthermore, Corelli directed opera pieces at the Cancelleria and the Tordinona theatre. In Naples, Italy on May 1, 1702, Corelli played Scarlattis Tiberio, imperator dOriente (Talbot 188).With his evidently superior skills, in 1706 Corelli was elected as one of only a handful of musicians to the select the artistic circle known as the Accademia degli Arcadi (Kemp par 2). Regrettably, after 1708, Arcange lo Corelli discharged himself from the existences eye, and busied himself with the composition of concerti grosso (Talbot 189). A few years later, in December of 1712, his health began to deteriorate. Consequently, Corelli wrote his will on January 5, 1713, in which he left all his violins, his manuscripts, the plates of his Opus 4, and his future Opus 6 to his pupil, Matteo Fornari.Three days later, Arcangelo Corelli, at the age of 59, died in Rome, Italy (Talbot 189) and was buried in the Pantheon, near Raphael Sanzio da Urbino, a famous painter (Kemp par 3). The anniversary of his death was marked for several years afterwards by solemn performances of his concertos in the Pantheon (Talbot 190). In relation to Corellis musical success, his musical style was revolutionary. Corelli popularized certain rhythmical stereotypes, in particular the walking or running bass in which an inessential note is interposed between two harmony notes (Talbot 196). His allegros are characterized by rapid changes of harmony underlining the metrical structure, repeated notes, widely ranging themes, idiomatic violin writing and a mechanically progressive rhythm (Whent par 6). Even though Arcangelo Corelli was an innovator of sorts, the only device he is named after is the Corelli clash (where the late resolution on to the leading note at a measuring stick coincides with the anticipation of the tonic note in the companion upper part) which was popular in 1680s dance music (Talbot 196).According to Talbot, in formal matters, Corelli is a good deal credited with the clearest exposition of the difference between the church and chamber varieties of sonata, and the establishment of four movements as the norm in both (196). Few composers achieved so lots so quickly, and with such economical means, as Corelli (200). Undoubtedly, Arcangelo Corelli created many masterpieces that received much praise during and after his lifetime. His Opus 1, to whom he dedicated to Queen Christina of Swe den, is twelve church trio-sonatas. (Arcangelo par 8).Opus 1 (Opera Prima) was written for two violins and Violone or Archlute with organ bass and in a somewhat serious contrapuntal style (Deas 7). Admittedly, Opus 1 has been reprinted through 35 known editions between 1681 and 1785 (Talbot 193). Following Opus 1 and 2, Corelli created Opus 3 (Opera Terza), which is a set of twelve trio-sonatas in dedication to the Duke of Modena in 1689 (Deas 6). According to Deas, in Opus 3 there is plenty of vigorous independent part-writing in the many fugal movements and, in the slow introductions and middle movements, a poise and dignity that might be called Handelian (7).In fact, Johann Sebastian Bach borrowed the subject of the second movement of Opus 3 No. 4 for an organ fugue ( Talbot 193). Not before long, Arcangelo Corelli was back at it again with his composition of Opus 5, the most popular opus of his career with 42 editions being reprinted by 1800 (Talbot 193). Opus 5 is a set of twe lve violin and bass sonatas that were dedicated to Sophia Charlotte, Electress of Brandenburg with no clear date of creation (Deas 6). Corellis Opus 5 go on to be performed and used as teaching pieces before and after his death (Zaslaw par 2).In fact, according to Zaslaw, no other set of works enjoyed a equal reception in the 18th century more than Corellis Opus 5 (par 1). Before his untimely death, Corelli started, but never finished Opus 6 (Opus Sesta). Opus 6, dedicated to John William, Elector Palatine, was finally finished and published in 1714 (Edwards 526) with help from Corellis former pupil Matteo Fornari (Talbot 189). In Corellis Opus 6 concerto grosso, the smaller group consists of two violins and a cello, and the larger of a string orchestra (Arcangelo par 5).Although Corelli did not invent concerto grosso, it was he who proved the potentialities of the form, popularized it, and wrote the first great music for it and if not for him as a model, it would have been imposs ible for Vivaldi, Handel, and Bach to have given us their concerto grosso masterpieces (Arcangelo par 4). Corelli reached his creative peak and climaxed all his musical contributions with the takings of his concerto grosso (Arcangelo par 3). In final consideration, Arcangelo Corelli, Italian violinist, was a heavy hitter of his time period.Corelli had many pupils that included Francesco Geminiani and Antonio Vivaldi who later went on to influence the famous Johann Sebastian Bach (Arcangelo par 9). His contributions can be divided three ways, a violinist, composer, and teacher. It was his skill on the new instrument known as the violin and his extensive and very popular concert tours throughout Europe which did most to give that instrument its prominent place in music (Arcangelo par 2). As a violinist, he was one of Europes most sought-after teachers, exerting an influence on instrumental technique which spread well into the 18th century (Kemp par 3).Point in fact, according to Kemp , his 48 published trio sonatas, 12 solo violin sonatas and 12 concerti grossi were quickly recognized as offering supreme models of their kind (par 3). As a composer he was the first to become famous based solely on instrumental composition, the first composer whose reputation was directly influenced by music publishers, and the first to produce instrumental works that would become classics (Cole par 1). Arcangelo Corelli has taken a place among the immortal musicians of all time, and he maintains that exalted position today and will forever remain a pioneer for baroque music (Arcangelo par 10).Works Cited Arcangelo Corelli. Cultural activities are activities where plurality spend their leisure time attending cultural venues and events. People want to get feelings of well-being and gain more knowledge by participating in cultural activities.Participation in cultural activities influences the development of students in many aspects, such as for enjoyment and knowledge. The involvement of students in cultural activities can help them develop a well-rounded education. For overseas students in Australia, participating in native cultural activities can also help them reduce culture snow and provide a better way for students to understand more information concerning the history, customs and beliefs in Australia. In a survey refer with participation in cultural activities among Australian people, it was found that about 85% of the Australian people who aged over 15 years old participat ed in at least(prenominal) one of cultural activity during the 12 months in 2005-06 (Australian Bureau of Statistics) (ABS) (2007). Going to the cinema was the most fashionable activity which had the highest percentages at 65% of people. Going to zoological parks and aquariums were the two second most ballpark activities, at 36% libraries and botanic gardens were at 34% (ABS, 2007). In addition, the same study found that people with higher educational background had considerably higher attendance rates than people with lower educational attainment at art galleries, museums, zoological parks and aquariums, libraries, popular music concerts, other performing humanistic discipline and the cinema. Moreover, in previous research, it was found that about 25% of respondents went to the library over 20 times during the year. Are Zoos Cruel or Educational Essay

Zoos are cruel because of new-made incidents that form hap published creating the deaths and injuries of some animals. In the 2005 DreamWorks move, Madagascar, a group of zoological gardenlogical garden animals wanted to leave the zoo for a day to explore New York little did they know there one day escape glum into an adventure greater than they could necessitate every imagine. While exploring New York they were accidentally shipped to the island of Madagascar. Though they were among other animals that research like them, the four friends found themselves totally out sync with the real world.Living in the zoo sheltered them from their ability to live in their natural habitat. Although zoos are educational, animals are held in captivity unable to live and thrive in their natural habitat. Zoo keepers, scientist and animal groups continue to debate the issue with zoos world each place of education and entertainment or unnecessary prisons. While some people urge that zoos pla y an important role in conservation and research, others counter that they do more harm than good.Zoos have been entertaining people with exotic animal collections since 1250 BC with Egyptian records describing different species of animals in captivity poop bars (Nationalgeographic. com). The Imperial Menagerie in Vienna, Austria was the first modern zoo established in 1752. in that location are thousands of zoos around the world today. Overtime, zoos have improved the environment for zoo animals from steel bar enclosures and wintry cement cages to illusions mimicking the animals natural habitat with moats and ditches that separate the animals from people who visit the zoo.Zoos are going beyond retentiveness animals alive in captivity. They have become more involved in conserving loopy animals, reintroducing endangered species, and restoring habitats (Nationalgeographic. com). So why do scientist and animal groups believe that zoos are far from entertaining and educational? Whi le conditions have improved for zoos by creating a natural habitat for animals critics continue to argue that the spacing available is non enough. Animals like zebras, giraffes and gazelles were designed to run across miles of open terrain, not live out their lives in captivity. in spite of a zoos scoop efforts, its animals often are deprived of privacy, confined to inadequate spaces and unable to engage in natural hunting and mating activities. Forced to live in man-made constructs, umteen animals began to display obsessive, repetitive behaviors (Fact Sheet on Zoos). David Hancocks, a zoo consultant and former zoo director, describes the natural-looking zoo inhabit as mere illusions, arguing that theyre not much of an improvement in equipment casualty of space (www. time. com). Many captive animals exhibit signs of severe distress People have witnessed elephants bobbing their heads, bears pacing spinal column and forth and wild cats obsessively grooming themselves (www. time. c om). This display of behavior has caused some animals to act out either among themselves or humans. SeaWorld trainer Dawn Brancheau was refineed on February 24, 2010 after being attacked by the killer whale Tilikum at Shamu Stadium in Orlando, Florida during a live performance. The whale dragged her underwater, toying with her until her death.Brancheau was described as one of the best in her profession. So what went wrong? Until behavior records are closely examined as to what led the whale to kill the trainer the question remains (www. time. com). In December 2007, Tatiana, a 4-year-old Siberian tiger, escaped from its enclosure at the San Francisco Zoo and killed one teen and injured two others on Christmas afternoon (Chua-Eoan). There have been umpteen articles about zoos keepers neglecting animals and displaying other acts of mistreatment. The most recent article comes from a zoo director being charged with animal cruelty.Meghan Mogensen, 27 year old zoo director allegedly dr owned a wounded wallaby in a bucket of water after suffering from an eye injury in his pen at the zoo (Daily News). In conclusion, although zoos have created natural-looking environments for animals, in my opinion, I believe it is cruel to house animals in captivity. The incidents mentioned above is proof to why animals need to be able to hunt and roam in the wild which cannot be created by a zoo. Market capitalization rate indicates the rate of return on investment. Therefore, the price of the stock = 24 (1 +0.09) 1/(1 + 0.15) 1 = 22.75 pence (Titman, Keown & Martin, n.d., pp. 3-13).The return on equity = Net income/equity. Manningtons ROE = 20%. Let net income be x. Therefore, 20% = x/(200,000,000 * 50) = x/10,000,000,000. X = (20% * 10,000,000,000) = 2,000,000,000. Mannington order decl ared 60% of the profits (net profit) as dividends. Given the companys expected rate of return, at this point it is possible to arrive at the value of the shares using the formula Vs = D/rs where Vs is share value, D is the dividend and rs is the expected return. Therefore, Vs = (6/0.13) = 46.15pence (Titman, Keown & Martin, n.d., pp. 3-13).Using the formula for constant dividend growth, RCs = D/Vcs + g where rcs is the return, D is the dividend, Vcs is the share price and g is the growth. Therefore, return = (20/2.35) + 0.06 = 8.571% (Titman, Keown & Martin, n.d., pp. 3-13).The directors purview that the retain earnings would be cheaper than the preference share is valid.
